Thank you so much for this great experience. It gives the opportunity for our children to see each other, develop a friendship and work together face to face.  It allows them to experience another culture, try new food, meet new friends and go to school in another country - it is a unique experience and one the students will remember forever.
It would not be possible without the support of Colegio San Gregorio or without the hospitality of the families and teachers here.  We look forward to having students from San Gregorio  visit us again soon and we will come back next year so a new group of students can learn from this fantastic opportunity.

Richard, Helen and Mary

Richard, Helen y Mary

A touristic guide about my town"

Primary and secondary sectors in Spain

During the last lesson we had a quick view about ECONOMY, talking about what all the sectors are and they main thing they work on. Today we are going to focus our attention in the Primary and Secondary Sector in our country Spain.

Let's watch this video about a man from Palencia. At the end of the video we want you to answer this video:

  • What are the best and the worst things for him as a crop farmer?

THE ACTIVE POPULATION.

Nowadays the active population in Spain is aroun 23 million of people. And because of the crisis 16,5 million are employed and around 6 million are unemployed people.

THE ECONOMY

Let's start this new topic with a new THINKING ROUTINE. The name of it is  QUICK WRITE / QUICK VIEW. In the following graphic organizer you have to do to things a picture about what come to your mind if you think about the new topic: ECONOMY and in the other part you will write short sentences and a few ideas about the same thing. You will have four minutes to finish it. Then we will share ideas with the whole class.

Let's have a look to the next video as an introduction of the topic. Maybe you will need to review what is RAW MATERIAL. After watching the video I want you to answer these questions.

  • What's the process for raw material from Primary to Tertiary Sector?
  • Could you tell me one operation of each sector?

WORK
It refers to the many productive activities which people do, usually for money.

We can have:

  • Active population: includes all the people who can work. The ones who are working and the ones who are unemployed.

  • Inactive population: The people who can't work: Children, retired people or disabled people.

PRIMARY SECTOR.
Raw material is obtained in the Primary Sector.

SECONDARY SECTOR:
Natural resources are transformed into products.

  • Manufacturing industries: they transform raw material into products.

  • Consumer industries: manufacture products such frozen vegetables.

SERVICE SECTOR:
All the bussinesses that provide servicies like schools or tourism.

  • Private services: They are controlled privately.
  • Public servicies: they are controlled by the state or the local goverment.

The environment: VEGETATION AND FAUNA

After having learnt about RIVERS and CLIMATE. Let's move onto last important part of the Environment: VEGETATION AND FAUNA

Before going indeep with this topic maybe it would be great to have a look to a video, but please pay attention to it because at the end you have to answer a question:
  • Can you name any animals or plants from the video?

Each climate has its own flora and fauna.
FLORA is all the plants life or vegetation in an area.

FAUNA is all the animal life in an area.

NATURAL PRESERVES

PLANT HABITATS can be affected by pollution, the growth of citiesor the explotation of natural resources.
Animals and plant species are disapearing or they are in danger of extinction.

NATIONAL PARKS are areas that govermente created to preserve and protect the enviroment like:

  • TEIDE in Spain.
  • SNOWDONIA in the United Kingdom.
  • VANOISE in France.
  • HARZ in Germany.

After having a look to all about the environment: RIVERS, CLIMATE and VEGETATION AND FAUNA. We will finish  with the thinking routine we had started this unit: THINKING ROUTINE: 3-2-1 BRIDGE
Now you need to complete again the chart but with the new ideas you have.

So in your notebook near the previous one let's draw and complete the following chart.

TIPS: Maybe to write an analogy or a metaphor will be very difficult for you in a foreing language so we invite you to write it in your own language, in this case Spanish. Here you have some examples that could help you to do it.

DISCOVER AND REFLEX ABOUT THE BRIGDE: when we are talking about brigde is how your ideas have changed, what new concepts you have learnt, how you have learnt all these new things.
